This study aims to examine the emotional responses and coping strategies of widowers who have lost their wives, with a specific focus on men from Indonesia. Through in-depth interviews, the project explores the emotional stages of grief, the subsequent life changes, and the strategies employed by widowers to cope with their loss. The findings provide valuable insights for mental health practitioners and NGOs supporting the emotional well-being of bereaved individuals.
Data Details
The objective was to understand the emotional experiences and coping strategies of widowers after the loss of a spouse. The study explored how they process grief, adapt socially, and manage role changes over time. It used qualitative data from in depth interviews with two widowers, each interviewed twice. The data consisted of full interview transcripts collected through a project by the Happy Marriage Counseling Center in Indonesia and focused on emotional responses to loss, coping methods, social adjustment, and changes in daily roles.
The Problem
Widowers pass through sadness, anger, disbelief, and acceptance, with different strength and length over time. They cope in varied ways, including spirituality, family support, quiet reflection, or focusing on work. Many face major life changes, such as taking on new household roles, feeling more isolated, and relying more on children. Support should focus on strong social networks, family involvement, reflective or spiritual practices, and positive daily activities like hobbies or community work. Professional counseling is important for those with long lasting sadness, low motivation, or trouble managing daily life.
The Solution
The study employs qualitative analysis to identify themes such as grief, emotional responses, and coping strategies. Using tools like ATLAS.ti, the data was categorized and coded to uncover patterns in the widowers' emotional experiences, including feelings of sadness, anger, isolation, and acceptance. The findings were then used to provide practical recommendations for supporting widowers in their grieving process.
